Are Cover Letters Pointless

Are Cover Letters Pointless Are Cover Letters Pointless Sometimes those online applicant tracking systems can take up to 30-45 minutes to fill in (I especially hate the ones that require you to manually add all your work history like the hiring manager wont already see that youve done this in your resume). And some even require applicants to take assessment and skills tests, which can take anywhere from another 30 minutes to one hour. So, to add a titelbild letter required stamp onto the process just makes it that much worse for job seekers. Especially as they listen to the tons of advice out there on perfecting your titelblatt letter. This is no easy task. Unlike a resume where you may have to modify your objective statement and a few skills and/or experiences depending on the role, a cover letters tailoring process can be much more extensive. You have to edit details, such asCompany name, address, phone numberDateAddressee (not to mention the time spent trying to find who the hirin g manager is if a name isnt immediately provided)Reason for applyingRelevant work experience andHow your skills make you the best candidate for that pspeciesicular punkt. As a job seeker who always makes sure to tailor her cover letter for each position I apply for, let me tell you, this task sucks up a large chunk of time during the job hunt. And as you learn more about the hiring process and how recruiters and hiring managers arent even spending 10 seconds looking at a persons resume, you cant help but begin to wonder, Whats the point? What exactly is the point? This is the question my cousin recently asked me after he applied for a job. When filling out the application, he noticed that the system left an option to add a cover letter, but it wasnt required. So, he skipped it.welches this the right thing to do? Are cover letters truly necessary during todays job search, especially if a job ad doesnt list this document as a requirement when applying?I think cover letters are very import ant and useful when directly submitting an application- that is, when youre required to apply by sending certain materials to a specific email address. This is very different from applying through an ATS because applicants should put their cover letters directly in the body of the email, which immediately shows the recruiter or hiring manager that youre interested in the job. Theyre much more professional than simply writing, I saw your job ad and am sending my resume to apply. After all, you are looking to secure a job, not respond to a Craigslist ad.But, if you are required to apply via an ATS where a cover letter is optional, unlike a direct email, your cover letter may not be the first information a hiring manager sees. So, is it a big deal?Well, like the familiar saying goes, It doesnt hurt to Even if the job ad doesnt say you need to include a cover letter, submitting one anyway could be beneficial.Oftentimes cover letters are more than just professional way to tell HR that yo ure applying for a job they can give recruiters and hiring managers a great deal of information about applicants aside from their resume.A few examples includeWriting skillsCover letters require applicants to writeduh. But, its not just about having a job seeker demonstrate his/her interest through writing, its about determining whether or not an applicant (and potential hire) can write well.Hiring managers will definitely look for the basics. Can the person spell? Can he or she put together a complete sentence? Does the letter flow? Does it even make sense? These details are extremely important to a recruiter as he or she wants to see firsthand that applicants have quality writing skills. Because, oftentimes, no matter what type of position youre applying for, it will require you to do some form of writing.Articulation capabilitiesCover letters are designed for job seekers to express why they should be considered for the next step in the hiring process- the interview. One must be ab le to adequately articulate this to a hiring manager. If on paper you cant convince HR to give you a second glance, the people in this department are much less likely to be convinced that youre worthy of an interview, and even less for the job.Detailed background informationAnother thing cover letters can offer hiring managers during the recruitment process is detail. Your resume can only tell a recruiter so much because it doesnt offer the space for details. This is where cover letters step in. They give you the chance to not only fully explain how the skills and experiences on your resume qualify you for the position, but opportunities to provide relevant, detailed examples from your work history. They can also help you go in depth as you explain what implemented an effective social media strategy really means and why thats significant to the position and potential employer.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME Landmark

Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME Landmark Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME Landmark Janney Coupler Named 267th ASME LandmarkASME will mark this years Rail Safety Week, which will be observed from Sept. 23 to 29, with the designation of the Janney coupler as the Societys 267th Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Rail Safety Week was launched last year by rail safety education nonprofit Operation Lifesaver Inc. in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation and other organizations.Patented in 1873 by Civil War veteran Eli Janney, the Janney coupler is being recognized for its impact on rail safety and its technological significance. The interlocking coupler, which resembled a curled menschlich hand, was the successor to the link and pin coupler, a device that required rail workers to stand between train cars while joining them an extremely dangerous procedure that resulted in numerous injuries and deaths. The Janney coupler is being designated as ASMEs 26 7th Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in recognition of its impact on rail safety and its technological significance. (Photo by Daniel Schwen)Also unlike the link and pin coupler, the Janney coupler joined train cars together reliably and firmly, resulting in less slack between the cars. Janneys innovative coupler design also allowed for the interchanging of cars across different lines, reducing the amount of time it took for freight and passenger trains to reach their destinations. By 1916, the Janney coupler had become the standard for the rail industry. Here during Rail Safety Week, as the nation focuses on the prevention of railroad fatalities and injuries, ASME looks back on the great heritage of the industry to recognize a device that brought increased safety to rail workers and passengers alike, said Said Jahanmir, president of ASME. The Janney is a worthy addition to our roster of mechanical engineering achievements. For more information on the ASME landmarks program, v isit www.asme.org/about-asme/engineering-history/landmarks.

The Liberation of a Structured Job Search Strategy

The Liberation of a Structured Job Search StrategyThe Liberation of a Structured Job Search StrategyThe Liberation of a Structured Job Search StrategyThis post is written by Jessee (pictured), a guest blogger. Shes a working professional and the author of the blog BusterPeach. Her career has endured four cross-country moves, two layoffs, a major merger, and the launch of three startups all with just two employers. While her expertise lies in contact center operations management, she has focused heavily on employee training and development and is especially passionate about coaching soft skills and sales performance. The apply online only world we live in makes it convenient to search and apply for jobs from the comfort of your home. But its a huge adjustment to spend your days job searching in coffee-stained pajamas and call that meaningful. After a recent layoff, my struggle with being housebound became most evident when my Mom asked each day, Find any good leads? I daydreamed of dro pping a hot iron skillet on her pinky toe.I missed the hum of work, feeling productive, and the comforts of a schedule.Family life became increasingly difficult. I began to define myself by my output of clean laundry, and I couldnt help but feel exploited every time people had the nerve to put on clean skivvies. After months of hovering over job boards the way I imagine a bookie monitors SportsCenter 24/7, I welches determined to change something up. I decided to rock this job search old school. Offline and face-to-faceOh, the village elders would be proudRejected and DejectedIn my best suit, with my best foot forward, I walked in to my target companies. I was committed to give a firm handshake, make a connection, and hand off my stunning resume. I even put on makeup.I was not prepared for what I experienced.Every receptionist was armed with a threadbare scriptMaam, Im sorry, you must apply onlineand generic business cards. In minutes, I was back in my car still holding my stunning r esume. These people know their mission is to deflect and redirect. While it felt good to be out of the house, I was spinning my wheels, and wasting my good pantyhose doing itDefeated, I went back home to stalk job openings and calm my jangled nerves with household chores. When my attic reached a state of organized utopia, I was at my lowest point. In a half-insane moment of total clarity, I designed a job search ordnungsprinzip resembling a schedule Id use if I were working. The schedule looked something like thisACTIVITY Search and Apply for JobsSCHEDULE Mondays and Thursdays, 900 - 1100 A.M.Mondays and Thursdays are the most strategic days, because newspaper job ads run Sundays and Wednesdays.Set up email alerts for job boards to notify you of new, relevant jobs.Give yourself permission to stop watching job boards every minute of every day. Trust that youre more effective when youre not burned out.ACTIVITYNetwork SCHEDULEWednesdays, 1200 - 100 P.M. and 700 - 800 P.M.Shamelessly interr ogate your network for leads. It can be as simple as meeting a former co-worker for coffee, going to the library, or attending a job fair.Spend this time outside the house, dressed for business.ACTIVITYFollow Up SCHEDULETuesdays and Fridays, 900 - 1100 A.M.Follow up by phone or email on each job youve applied to. Use a loose script of savvy questions to get on the employers radar and stay there.ACTIVITYOrganize and Track SCHEDULE OngoingSet up a paper or electronic file for each job you apply for Hint Resumes Tracker and Task Manager do a lot of this for you automatically. Include notes onJob description, source of the posting, specific resume and cover letter you sent, relevant company research.Journal your interactions (on paper or online), maintain all contact names, telephone numbers and email/postal addresses. Your first entry on the journal should be something like Applied Online 03/29/09. Subsequent entries should detail names, dates of contact, and any specifics that were di scussed.Once I had a schedule with smart goals on it for each day, I could devote the allotted time to advance my job search, feel the pleasure of accomplishment, and then set it aside. As a bonus, I was able to give myself permission to catch up on those DVR recordings and enjoy my family without the constant sense that I was neglecting my job search duties.Pinky toes everywhere are thanking meWhat methods do you use to organize your job search?

Why We Have Eyelashes

Why We Have Eyelashes Why We Have Eyelashes Why We Have Eyelashes When his daughter welches born, fluid dynamicist David Hu was astonished at the length of her eyelashes. The fact that the newborn was otherwise hairless prompted him to question why we have these hairs at the edge of ur eyelids to begin with. No one had an answer. So Hu and his colleagues at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta set out to measure the eyelashes of 22 mammals. What they found was that the length of eyelashes is roughly one-third the width of the mammalian eye. They then devised mockups of the eye by building a wind tunnel that could blow air past a cup of water with eyelashes on its rim. That length of one-third the eyes width reduced evaporation of the cups water by a factor of twoessentially helping keep the eyes moist by reducing the airflow. Shorter lashes faileuchtdiode at properly blocking the air and longer ones actually directed more airflow to the eye.Listen to the latest episode of ASME Te chCast Breakthrough Could Bring New Cancer TreatmentSimilar circumstancesan incident where his infant son urinated on him during a diaper changeled Hu to discover that all animals weighing more than 3 kg (6.6 pounds) urinate for approximately 21 seconds, no matter their body size. That finding, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences earned him a 2015 Ig edel prize, recognizing research that makes people laugh and think.David Hu studies animals to learn how they have evolved to meet physical challenges. Here, he examines how mosquito wings react to dew. Image Candler HobbsGet past the chuckle and the implications of the paper are profound Nature uses gravity in a way to optimize a necessary task without wasting energy, a discovery that could advance water systems like fire hoses, water tanks, and water-filled backpacks.Hu runs a biolocomotion laboratory at the Georgia Tech, where he is an associate professor of mechanical engineering and biology. For him, an imals are the key to discovering new, physical ways of dealing with the world. They teach us how to accomplish difficult tasks that many life forms undertake very efficiently, like moving around, eating, drinking, storing and releasing waste, and keeping things clean. We try to identify the few real champions, animals that are really typifying optimal ways to do these processes, Hu said.Join ASME and Leading Industry Experts for Offshore Wind Turbine Webinar seriesThe idea falls in line with the principle popularized in 1929 by physiologist August Krogh. It states that for many tasks there will be one or more animals in nature that could be used as models.Evolutionary history provides a phenomenal and very long-duration testing ground for all kinds of environments and uses for systems, said Sheila Patek, associate professor of biology at Duke University. We landsee that revealed through the spectacular diversity of systems around us.WALKING ON WATERHu has been studying the intersecti on between engineering and natural systems for most of his career. His undergraduate advisor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology was Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan, a mechanical engineer who used math to describe natural processes. It was a time of renewed and growing interest in that field. In class, Hu studied termite mounds and plants, and professors demonstrated mechanical devices that were designed to move like fish. But it wasnt until after working for an oil company and returning to school for graduate studies in the early 2000s that Hu really began to focus on this field. It started as a homework assignment on how water striders walk on water for John W.M. Bush, professor of applied mathematics at MIT and an expert in surface tension.Bush remembers Hu as playful and fun to work with.I also appreciated his resourcefulness and tenacity, Bush said. When I suggested the water strider problem to him, the first thing he did was to go hunting for water striders at a nearby pond.Rea d another story on Engineers Inspired by Animals Using the Eyes of Killer Shrimp to Design A Super CameraResearchers believed that water striders were able to walk on water by making waves that help push them forward. That led to a mystery first identified by Stanford biologist Mark Denny Young water striders couldnt move their legs fast enough to create the waves necessary to walk on water. But they could, so how did they do it?Bush, Hu, and mechanical engineering graduate student Brian Chan studied water striders in the lab using high-speed photography coupled with flow-visualization technology. They saw that water strider legs never actually break the water surface. Instead, they row across it.Once we had them water striders in the lab, we were able to quickly validate our view that they were shedding vortices with each leg stroke, thereby resolving a paradox in the biolocomotion literature, Bush said.Chan, with the help of Bush and Hu, then designed a robotic water strider, Robo strider, to mimic what they learned.I believe that it was the first non-buoyant water-walking device, Bush said. It has certainly spawned an entire generation of more sophisticated devices developed by engineers along the same lines, the utility of which remains to be seen. The three detailed the findings in a paper for Nature, and Hu turned it into his doctoral thesis. At Georgia Tech, Hu is mostly focused on biomechanics of animal locomotion. A lot of his work is centered on everyday wonders that many might not stop to consider. Researchers use it to aid them in developing robots and other useful devices.Hu has tried to popularize some of these findings in his book, How to Walk on Water and Climb up Walls Animal Movements and the Robotics of the Future.Read about David Hus Disciple How Elephants Use Their Tails to Chase Away MosquitoesBut the down-to-earth focus of his research has drawn not just gentle ribbing, like the Ig Noble Prize, but outright scorn. Former United States Senat or Jeff Flake, for instance, included three of his projects as part of a top 20 list of wasteful federally funded science undertakings. Many scientists are likely to take issue with such criticism. There is also a long history of extraordinary discoveries from everyday phenomena and our surrounding biological world, Patek said. We wouldnt be flying around in airplanes without that kind of initial fascination and inspiration. Ive found that folks who make that argument often just arent aware of the necessary and integral interplay of basic and applied research.CATALOGUE OF WONDERSHu responded directly to Flake via an Emory University TEDx talk. But his work and its forthcoming applications are perhaps the best response to this type of criticism.Cats tongues are covered with bristles. Hus team used this insight to create a special hairbrush. Image Georgia TechFor instance, Hu, researcher Alexis Noel, and their colleagues recently looked at the structure of cat tongues, which are known f or being sandpapery rough. The research team discovered grooves in the millimeter-tall spikes on the top of the tongues that enable them to plek up saliva. As a cat grooms, the saliva is spread through the fur to the skin, essentially washing both.People have looked at cat tongues before and no one observed they have this particular shape, Hu said. He credits the use of 3D scanners and printers to spot the structures and verify their purpose.Hu and his colleagues are now working on a patent for a cat-inspired hairbrush that would help pet-owners with allergies for whom there are currently few solutions. This hairbrush, designed based on a cats tongue, can remove some of the allergens on cat fur, Hu said. Theres no way we couldve designed that unless we looked at animals.Readers Choice Insect Drone with Camera Flies Like a BeeA large personal care company has already expressed interest in the product.Another research project involved studying the feeding habits of maggots in container s.A startup founded by Georgia Tech students raises black soldier fly larvae, Hermetia illucens, to quickly consume food waste. The hope is that the larvae could consume some of the 1.3 billion tons of food waste produced worldwide each year, and that the well-fed larvae could then become high-protein feed for fish, chicken, and other livestock. Its a really novel way to deal with the waste problem, Hu said. The problem is figuring out the optimal way to get the wasted food to the larvae. The larvae eat in five-minute bursts, and while they are feeding other hungry maggots are pushing to get a bite, much the way pigs jostle at the trough.Just drop food in a bin of larvae and some will be well-fed while others will struggle. By observing their behavior and creating models that simulate the larvae eating habits, Hu hopes to better understand how to feed and mix them, turning maggot farm einzelschritt into a conveyor belt of insects so there wont be any blockages, or traffic jams.Read ab out Engineers Solving World Hunger with 3D-Printed FoodHis team is also studying the star-nosed mole, an almost completely blind mammal that has evolved a way to hunt underwater by sense of smell. The mole will breathe out a bubblea bit like a four-year-old with a coldand then inhale it back before it pinches off and floats away. The bubble captures chemical traces of the surrounding water and alerts the mole to any nearby prey.Figuring out how the mole accomplishes this task could help technologists develop new types of underwater sensors, which are currently prone to biofilm formation, a surface growth of algae or bacteria that is especially common in ocean water. We believe that this underwater sniffing technique could circumvent the problem entirely, said Alexander Bo Lee, a doctoral student in quantitative biosciences at Georgia Tech who works with Hu. It would employ a gas sensor that never touches the water. Instead, a bubble would sniff in and out to probe the water for chemi cals and transfer them to the sensor. Without any contact with the water, bacteria and algae cant form biofilms on the gas sensor. The team suspected that the star shape of the moles nose was a key factor in the stability of created bubbles. They watched videos of the mole and noticed that it also tilts its body side to side when blowing bubbles. So they built and tested devices that look like a moles nose. The experiment involved mimicking the star-shaped geometry by laser-cutting plastic stars, said Lee, who was the first author of a paper on the research that was published in Physical Review Fluids. We then formed a bubble against the stars. We found that the fins of the star prevent the bubble from rising, but the gaps in between the fins play a role in preventing the bubble from sliding off the star when the entire system is tilted. Bubbles rising through the gaps of the star act as counterweights, keeping the bubble centered on the nozzle.Read about Engineers Merging Biology and Electronics The Bionic MushroomWhile that first set of experiments focused on static bubble stability, the team is now looking at the dynamics of oscillating bubbles using an artificial nose olfactory sensor with the star glued to the end. The hope is to learn what happens as the bubble is exhaled and inhaled at different rates and in bursts. One of the big factors in how animals sense their environment through odor is that they dont use continuing motion. When you have dirty gym socks you dont smell continuously, you exhale and inhale, in short bursts, Hu said. The goal of the star-and-nose experiment is to understand the fluid mechanical consequences of having this type of airflow, one that the mole is able to achieve under water. For Hu, the world is one large catalogue of wonders, with inspiration at every corner. All one has to do is look, find an exemplary organism, mimic, and build upon its mechanisms. It is a quintessential human activity to see what other organisms can do and then wonder whether we, as humans, could build something new or achieve some new capability, Patek said. Gender diversity provides huge benefi ts in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 mio construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or lo oking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experienc ing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 20 18 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long w ay to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Summer Career Networking Style Its in the Details

Summer Career Networking Style Its in the DetailsSummer Career Networking Style Its in the DetailsFrom the boardroom to a barbecue, your personal style should shine through. When youre shaking hands and exchanging business cards this summer, the most important thing to remember is that tzu siches a fine line between standing out and overdoing it. From the boardroom to a barbecue, your personal style should shine through in the details without overwhelming your entire wardrobe or showing up your interviewer or colleagues. Its also important to stay cool and look cool. So keep the clothing light and to a nadir let the accents carry the day. Whether its a pair of cufflinks, a handsome briefcase, a beautiful scarf or the perfect pair of sunglasses, you will stand out because you nailed classic style with a modern twist.Use this guide to stay classic and cool in every scenario of the job search from networking to the interview.1. A formal interviewThe good news is theres not much wiggle roo m when it comes to wardrobe for the formal interview. A suit is critical. Think about dressing 5 percent to 10 percent mora formal than you would before your first day at a new job. You want to look classic, not trendy. You want the focus to be on your job performance, not your wardrobe. For menLook for a two- or three-button wool suit in gray or navy. Do not wear black. A black suit looks like youre attending a funeral or driving a hearse. Wear a solid-white, light-gray or light-blue shirt, but keep in mind that white looks good against all complexions and makes your skin pop the most. Make sure half an inch of your cuff is visible. If its not, your suit sleeves are too long. Your trousers should break slightly at the hem.If you already own a suit but youre not sure about the fit, invest in a good tailor. He will be able to tell if your suit needs to be reworked or replaced. Never underestimate the importance of a properly fitted suit. The fit of the suit is everything. A slouchy su it looks sloppy.Wear a silk tie something solid, especially blue or yellow. Save red for your first day of work.Carry a proper brown or black structured leather briefcase with handles. No backpacks. No messenger bags. No duffel bags. No bags on wheels. Ever. For womenKeep it light in both fabric and color, but dont wear a white dress or suit. White is the least serious color and looks too casual. The lightest you should go is cream. If the position is less corporate, you may want to try mixing separates, like a solid sleeveless dress with a tailored jacket in a brighter color or pattern. Look for a slim-notch lapel to keep it modern.Dont be afraid to toss the suit and wear a sharp dress with a jacket. The benefit to wearing a sleeveless dress is that you can remove your jacket until right before your interview, so youll stay cooler. To create shape, cinch a skinny or chunky black belt around the jacket.A mora classic skirt or pants suit paired with a pretty printed silk blouse is als o a lovely combination.Avoid anschauung jewelry simple hoop earrings or pearls are perfect.Avoid It bags for interviews, especially if theyre made of exotic skin or covered in hardware. Your bag should be big enough to hold all the necessities. Try an elegant leather tote in a solid classic color like tan or black.2. A job fairYoull want to dress similarly to your interview attire, but with a bit more personality to avoid getting lost in the crowd. For menSince a future employer can see you from every angle, focus on the extra details. If youre wearing a suit, lose the tie in favor of a crisp white pocket square. If you know no one else will be wearing a suit, wear a pair of dark denim jeans or tan chinos with a tucked-in dress shirt (light pink softens your face under those harsh fluorescent lights) and a sport coat with some texture pinstripe, windowpane, houndstooth or herringbone. Save your plaid suits for autumn.Wear a solid brown or black leather belt with a square buckle. You r belt should match your shoes.Newly shined brown shoes from chestnut to chocolate stand out the most. Look for round-toe shoes. (No square-toed shoes)A messenger bag is the most practical option and looks sophisticated as long as its not bulky or made of nylon. Stick with segeltuchschuh or leather. For womenIts not necessary to wear a suit to a networking event, but you want to be comfortable and chic. Solid-colored trousers or pencil skirts with a wool/Lycra blend help avoid wrinkles. Keep the colors classic cream, tan, navy, black. Pair them with a patterned jacket to create a point of interest, or if youd prefer a more classic look, wear a solid jacket with a floral, bow-front or ruffled blouse underneath, which are several of the seasons trends. You could also try a three-quarter -sleeve cotton pinstripe dress shirt to give the look some texture, tucked in, with a skinny belt, simple earrings and ballet flats. As beautiful as heels can be, when youre walking around a 10,000-squar e-foot convention center exchanging business cards, its hard to smile when your feet are aching. Look for one- or two-tone flats. (Black and tan is a nice combination.)3. An informal networking eventSummer presents opportunities to network in casual locales like a dinner cruise or the roof deck of a potential employers building. Such events present a special challenge because its potentially hot outside, making it tempting to dress down or show more skin. You should still take extra care in your wardrobe you never know whom you may end up shaking hands with. For menOn a dinner cruise, preppy and nautical styles often look best, as long as theyre not overly campy (i.e. lobster-embroidered chinos) or exaggerated (a navy blazer with brass buttons). In either situation, its okay to ditch the suit in favor of lightweight straight-leg denim (white is a nice alternative to blue jeans for summer) or khakis. You could pair your trousers with a crisp, fitted polo in a solid color or a button-do wn, like a blue or dark-purple check, or a light-blue contrast-collar.If youre on a boat, deck shoes without socks are appropriate if youre on a roof deck, try a pair of classic brown leather loafers or cap-toe lace-ups.For womenThe key to dressing for a cruise is that you want to look glamorous youre on a boat while remaining sure-footed. Try to avoid heels, and if youre going to wear a dress or a skirt, make sure its windproof as you dont want to risk the obvious.Infuse some color and light into your look with a pretty silk scarf or colorful lightweight wrap, or a gorgeous pair of chandelier earrings. You could also try pairing a lightweight tunic with detailing on the neckline with cream trousers and metallic flats. If youre on a roof deck, women should try to dress as they would for an early-evening cocktail gathering (below).4. Drinks after workYour friend invites you out for a few drinks with a group of people who work in your industry. Your wardrobe should remain professiona l without making those around you feel like theyre still at the office. For menShow up wearing a suit, but take your jacket off soon after you arrive. If you work in a slightly more casual/creative field, wear dark jeans and oxfords with a button-down shirt tucked in and a belt.Wear a handsome watch. Bars are often crowded, and people notice more what youre wearing from the waist up A gorgeous brown leather belt with a square buckle, a classic-looking chronograph watch, a unique pocket square. A pinstripe shirt. Cufflinks. Even if the bar is dark, youre speaking close to people, and they will notice the details. For womenGo from day to evening with a few simple tricks that dont necessarily require changing. If youre wearing a suit, remove your jacket, add a belt, and replace your flats with heels. The most classic shoes are round or pointy and closed-toe in black, brown or cream. For a night out, you can try something strappier, like a metallic sandal.Add a little color and liveliness with a gorgeous statement necklace one of the major looks of the season. A statement necklace is more than just a simple strand of pearls or a pendant on a chain it is a big, bold announcement, often filling your entire neckline with sequins, stones, glass or metal. It melds with whatever youre wearing, thus becoming the outfit. Everyone from Banana Republic to Burberry designs these, so theyre not hard to find.Keep the rest of your look minimal with solid colors and minimal jewelry. Top off the outfit with a pretty beaded clutch, which will be much less bulky in a cramped bar than your tote, but can still fit your business cards.5. A baseball gameTheres nothing more casual than Americas favorite pastime. It is tempting to throw on a team T-shirt and a baseball cap, but if a colleague invites you to join her in her companys box seats, dress slightly more formally. For menCool comfort is key when you have to be on while spending the day under the hot sun or an evening in the humidit y. Pair straight-leg chinos with a fitted polo (stick with white since itll keep you coolest in the sun) and leather sandals. Throw on a pair of aviators to shield your eyes. For womenA cotton shirtdress, belted, with white tennis sneakers is a fun way to dress up the occasion while looking as relaxed as if you were wearing shorts and a T-shirt.Keep your accessories unfussy. Stick with the basics sunglasses, a sleek stainless-steel watch and a canvas tote.6. A backyard barbecueYouve been invited to a friends house for a midsummer barbeque, and a potential employer may be stopping by. You would look out of place if you dressed up, but you also dont want to look frumpy in his presence. For menThis is the trickiest situation possible because youre expected to behave formally but not appear formal. On a hot day, wear flat-front cotton khaki shorts that hit between the knee and mid-thigh. Anything longer looks young and sloppy. Steer clear of cargo shorts, which are bulky. A fitted polo sh irt or a cotton or linen button-down is always clean and handsome.Leather sandals or clean white tennis sneakers are the best footwear option. You can wear canvas or leather flip- flops, but never rubber ones.Even though youre dressing down, dont forget the extra details - a pair of aviators and a chunky stainless-steel watch. For womenEating hot dogs and hamburgers in the sun calls for comfort. A cotton or linen sundress (as long as its not too lightweight or flimsy) that hits at the knee is a beautiful option. (Make sure to wear a nude slip underneath if there is any chance its see-through in broad daylight.) Pair with leather sandals or wedges. Cotton shorts or skirts (denim is fine) are also appropriate, and you can pair them with a light cotton T-shirt or tank top, as long as theyre not too skimpy.Keep a lightweight cardigan or shawl on hand for when it cools down.Aviator sunglasses pair nicely with shorts, while plastic frames in black or tortoiseshell feel more refined and wo uld better complement a sundress.

And the award for worst commute goes to ...

And the award for worst commute goes to ... And the award for worst commute goes to ... Everyone has that one terrible commute story that they think is deserving of a reward  for what they endured. In New York City - which has the country’s longest commute time  - you can actually win a prize for your commuting heroism.Last week, advocates from the Riders Alliance group launched a weekly contest to determine which New Yorker had the worst subway commute to promote “the reality of what 5.5 million New Yorkers suffer on the subways every single day” to policymakers deciding the aging Metropolitan Transit Authority’s budget for repairs. A New York Times investigation found that the MTA had the most delays out of any major rapid transit system in the world.NYC woman wins award for worst commuteOn Tuesday, one New York City woman was crowned the inaugural Worst Commute award winner for surviving a  30-minute trip that became a two-hour ordeal. Jennifer Tang, a librarian from Forest Hills, Queens, explained how her daily commute to work became a nightmare for her bo dy and mind.“I was in a hurry to get home and didn’t use the bathroom, figuring my 30-minute commute from Manhattan to Queens wasn’t going to be so bad,” Tang wrote in her submission. But just one stop away from her destination, her train got stuck in the tunnel for two hours due to “signal problems.” Unable to use a bathroom, Tang could only wait for relief.“By the time the train pulled into the 67th Avenue station, I had to run to a nearby Starbucks in order to pee,” she wrote. “I still have post-traumatic stress syndrome from this incident. Now, before boarding the subway, even if it’s for one stop, I use the bathroom before I get on the torture chamber that is the MTA subway.”New York, New Jersey, Illinois have worst commute timesData shows why stories like Tang’s are likely to continue in New York City. Using U.S. Census Bureau data, Business Insider ranked average commute times across 20 major American cities. At 39.9 minutes, New York City had the longes t commute time. Jersey City and Newark in New Jersey came in second and third at 36.2 and 34.4 minutes. Chicago’s 34.1-minute commute time average came in fourth. How commutes infect workplace attitudesBad commutes are not just an individual misery, they’re a workplace issue causing disengaged, unhappy workers. The stress of road traffic and subway delays you experience in the morning sets the tone of how you’ll feel for the rest of the day. In a survey of activities that made 900 participants unhappy, morning commutes were the most miserable activity, beating out working at your job or cleaning the house.Another  recent study concluded that a 20-minute increase in a worker’s round-trip commute time has the same effect on job satisfaction as a 19% reduction in income. So next time you feel crummy on your soul-sucking commute, take heart in knowing that you’re not the only one finding this endurance sport unbearable.

5 Advances in Smart Fabrics

5 Advances in Smart Fabrics 5 Advances in Smart Fabrics 5 Advances in Smart Fabrics Fabrics can do more than keep their wearers warm or clothed or help them make a fashion statement. Newly designed materials, sometimes called smart fabrics or smart textiles, incorporate a number of advances that help them generate electricity, cool the body, and even capture greenhouse gases. Below, weve detailed five smart textiles and their not-so-futuristic functions. Powered and Warmed by the Sun Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology recently developed a fabric that generates electricity from the sun and the wind surrounding the wearer. Garments made from the material could one day power the smartphones or global positioning systems their wearers use every day, says Zhong Lin Wang, a professor in Georgia Techs school of materials science and engineering. To create the material, the researchers used lightweight polymer fibers, photoanodes (the anode of a photoelectron cell), and fiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators. The latter use the triboelectric effect, a type of electrification at contact, and electrostatic induction to generate a small amount of electrical power from mechanical motion, in this case, the wind that blows across the nanogenerators, Wang says. A bracelet is made from fabric woven with special energy-harvesting strands. Image: Georgia Tech The photoanodes are used to harvest the sunlight. The anodes, fibers, and nanogenerators are then woven with strands of wool into a 320-micrometer thick fabric that can be used to make tents, curtains, or wearable garments, he says. The backbone of the textile is made of commonly used polymer materials that are inexpensive to make and environmentally friendly, Wang said. That also means they can be produced via large-scale manufacturing methods. In one of their experiments, Wangs team used a fabric about the size of a sheet of office paper. They attached it to rod like a small colorful flag. Rolling down the windows in a car and letting the flag blow in the wind, the researchers were able to generate significant power from a moving car on a cloudy day. The researchers also measured the output of a four-by-five centimeter piece of the fabric and found it charged a two-microfarad commercial capacitor to two volts in one minute under sunlight and movement. That indicates it has a decent capability of working even in a harsh environment, says Wang. Clothed Cooling On the other side of the nation, engineers at Stanford University have developed a low-cost, plastic clothing material that could cool the body more efficiently than natural or synthetic fabrics. A low-cost plastic material that could become the basis for clothing that keeps people cool in hot climate. Image: Stanford University If you can cool the person rather than the building where they work or live, that will save energy, says Yi Cui, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford. The researchers found a type of polyethylene with a specific nanostructure that makes it opaque to visible light, for modesty, yet is transparent to infrared radiation, to let body heat escape. So in addition to letting perspiration evaporate through the material, something ordinary fabrics already do, the three-ply polyethylene allows thermal radiation, air, and water vapor to pass through, and it is opaque to visible light, Cui says. They modified industrial polyethylene by treating it with benign chemicals to enable water vapor molecules to evaporate through nanopores in the plastic, allowing the plastic to breathe like a natural fiber, says researcher Po-Chun Hsu. Those who wear the clothing made from the material feel nearly four degrees Fahrenheit cooler than if they wore cotton clothing, Cui says. Artificial-Light Energy ThermalTech, from the company of the same name, calls upon energy-absorbing technology embedded in fabric to transform the suns ultraviolet rays as well as energy from artificial light into heat to warm wearers in minutes. Jackets are made of ThermalTech fabric. Image: ThermalTech The fabric is made of a 100 percent stainless-steel mesh coated with a solar technology similar to that used for solar water-heaters, says Araceli Ríos Flores, the companys chief technology officer. The company recently carried out a successful Indiegogo funding campaign to create a solar-powered smart jacket that incorporates ThermalTech. The jacket resembles a common lightweight winter coat and warms wearers up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit within two minutes, Flores says. In September, the company began shipping jackets to early backers. Electronic Skin Xenoma, a company spun-out from the Someya lab at the University of Tokyo in 2015, integrates stretchable circuit and sensor technologies with traditional textiles to remotely monitor the users motion, respiration, and body temperature for the virtual reality gaming, healthcare, and fitness apparel markets. The stretchable circuit technology allows more than 30 sensors to be integrated into a shirt. The number, type, and location of sensors can be fully customizable, says Osamu Sawanobori, the companys co-founder and its chief development officer. E-skin can be worn like a typical shirt and is machine washable, he says. Captured Greenhouse Gases Smart Textiles, a Swedish research lab, on the other hand, is at work on textiles that use a methane filtration production method, which, say its creators, make for clothing made from greenhouse gases filtered from the air. The lab has teamed with researchers at the University of Borås in Sweden to develop a method that binds methane gas from the atmosphere with textiles, says Lena-Marie Jensen, Smart Textiles coordinator. The lab wants to develop a product made from greenhouse gases and air in order to demonstrate to the market that it is possible. If we can achieve a cycle where the producer and the retailer can make it simple for the customer to leave garments to be repaired or recycled, textile fibers never have to become garbage again, Jensen says. Making the Cut

Making the Cut Making the Cut Making the Cut Cell research is a key driver of medical breakthroughs but one ever-present challenge has been finding a way into the cell and transporting it. One group at UCLA has been out to solve this problem by thinking smallnanoblade small. By literally cutting and slicing the cell, their work has taken precision to a level few considered possible. When we started talking about this 10 years ago, some people just werent positive about its chance of success, says Eric Chiou, professor of mechanical engineering and aerospace at UCLA. The idea of getting inside a cell and getting it out of there? How do you do that without destroying the cell? If you open it, then it can reheal. But if you open the hole too big then that can kill the cell. But we stuck to it and believed in the work. Their strategy was to have a nanoblade actually open up the cell through the outer membrane by using a laser. Fundamentally, you have a light to trigger a high-temperature piece near the cell membrane, says Chiou, who has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from UCLA and in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. And heat being there for a short time is how we started. The thought was to use some kind of metal to harvest laser pores to trigger a heating event. It involved opening up the cell but not going inside it where it could possibly do damage. Scientists have developed a laser-powered nanoblade that makes small slits on the surface of cells. Image: UCLA The first version of the nanoblade was constructed out of a glass pipette and the surface was a very thin layer of titanium, he says. The nanoblade cut and then there was the creation of an instant local explosion which sliced open a cell membrane. I think you could say thats just a little different from conventional cutting with a knife, he laughs. Once the cell was cut open, pressure was applied to the glass pipette and the liquid was then squeezed out of the cell. With the membrane open, the material will then flow into the cell. And thats when youre talking about the membrane actually coming back and rehealing itself, he adds. The second version worked with 200 cells over an hour, he estimates. As for applications, the nanoblade has been utilized in work on mitochondria, a vital organelle in the body. Mitochondria delivery can lead to potentially understanding diseases but I believe there can be many helpful medical possibilities because of this tool, he says, adding that the team is presently working on a more complicated system that may be able to work on 100,000 cells per minute. He relishes the fact that theyve been able to prove themselves to doubters and looks forward to improvements. Its exciting to think about, considering how many difficulties are involved in medical research to begin with, he says. If this can play any role in research that can save lives then that would be an incredible feeling. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Why Your Job Search Isnt Successful

Why Your Job Search Isn't Successful Why Your Job Search Isn't Successful We’ve isolated five common job-search problems and are giving you the solutions. Are you stuck in a job-search rut? You might be making one of these classic mistakes. Read on to learn some of the most common job-search errors, and what you can do to get your job hunt back on track.#1:  Winging ItThe first steps most people take when beginning a job search include resume updates or networking activities. However, there’s a step each job seeker should take prior to these activities: inventory your key skill sets and passions and document a clear set of job goals. These will influence all your job-search activities, including how  your resume and online profiles are positioned, which jobs you apply to, and with whom to  network. If you don’t lay this groundwork, there’s a good chance you’ll lose focus or change your goals halfway through the process, unnecessarily prolonging your job search.#2:  DIY resume writingYou, like most people, probably consider your career to be an imp ortant part of your identity. That’s one of the reasons the job search can be such an emotional rollercoaster. It’s personal. And for that very reason, it’s difficult for job seekers to be objective when writing their own resumes. An eye-tracking study from Ladders found that recruiters spend an average of six seconds reviewing a resume before they decide if you are a fit for the job. You need to make that time count!  Having your resume rewritten by a professional can make you 40 percent more likely to land the job you want.#3:  Thinking one and doneJob seekers will often stick to the one job-search method with which they’re most comfortable. However, searching for a job in today’s market requires you to use more than one channel to pursue leads. Harness the power of three : apply to jobs online, engage in recruiter activity, and utilize your social and professional network connections. This will increase the number of opportunities you can pursue.#4:  Failing to follow u pMost people fail to follow up within 24 hours of going on an interview. By following up with a tailored message after each interview, you differentiate yourself from the competition. Reiterate the main  points from your discussion, address how  you can solve the hiring manager’s current needs, and highlight any information you didn’t get to share in the interview that’s relevant to the position. Use each follow-up as an opportunity to advance your position in the hiring process.#5: Job searching sometimesSearching for a job is its own job. To land the role you want, you need to maintain a consistent level of activity each week. If you have a bad day in the job hunt, double your efforts the following day rather than taking a break. Review your schedule and block off time each week for your job-search activities. Luckily, this doesn’t require you to be glued to your computer screen all day. Leverage your smartphone and job-search apps to search on the go. Set small, achievabl e weekly goals around each job-search activity and track your progress.

7 Tips to Get Your Resume Noticed in the Blink of an Eye

7 Tips to Get Your Resume Noticed in the Blink of an Eye 7 Tips to Get Your Resume Noticed in the Blink of an Eye Just like fashion, resume writing is ever changing. If you want to keep up, you have to follow the newest trends. A resume that got you a job two years ago, might easily be thrown into the bin in 2016. A couple of years ago, recruiters spent twice as much time going over a candidates resume than now. In 2016, if youre lucky to have a human read your resume (many companies use ATSs Applicant Tracking Systems), be sure that he or she wont be wasting more than 6 seconds on an average looking resume. Recruiters have grown too picky when choosing the right man/woman for the job. In order to get their attention and invite you for an interview, your resume must be up-to-date. So, if you havent done so already, its about time to give your resume a little facelift. Here are a couple of valuable tips for you to modernize your resume and make it stand out in 2016. Good luck! 1. Pimp your resume Give it a modern look. The design of your resume is what makes the first impression so its crucially important. First, you have to consider what industry you want to work in. If you’re applying for any creative job, (e.g. graphic designer, copywriter, architect, etc.) you can afford to go a little wild and create a resume thats a bit off-the-wall. It can look something like this: For public sector jobs or corporate jobs its best to go for a more traditional resume. Were not saying you cant stand out. Even if your industry requires a strictly professional looking resume, it doesnt have to be boring. Just pick a neat, clear structured template without much embellishments. Heres an example: The newest trends in resume writing are in favor of monochrome design. The world is obsessed with minimalism right now and so are the hiring managers. If you love colors, add some subtle color details to your resume by means of headings, borders, icons or graphs. Since the current trends dont support photos on resumes, be original and create your own logo instead. 2. Simple fonts win When it comes to fonts, minimalism rules again. Pick an easily legible, preferably a sans-serif font, e.g. Arial, Cambria, Helvetica or any other similar typeface. Choosing a universal typeface is practical since they translate well between different operating systems. Even though it doesnt make much difference now that the vast majority of resumes are being sent as PDF files, these standard fonts are still popular with the hiring managers. Special tip: Use bolded font to highlight information you wish the hiring manager to notice first. Put your greatest achievements or skills youre best at in bold because a human eye subconsciously focuses on highlighted text. It works, right?   3. Lose the resume objective Resume objectives belong to history. Most hiring managers dont like seeing objectives on resumes since theyre usually just cliché statements that dont add any real value to the candidates skills. Depending on the amount of your experience, you can consider writing a short executive summary. It can easily be just a couple of bullet points summing up your most powerful skills. Keep in mind that your summary should communicate your aptness to the job position in question. 4. Ditch buzzwords Are you a proactive, self-motivated professional who thinks outside the box? Alright, but so are most of the people. Dont be like everyone else and forget these buzzwords.   Buzzwords don’t appeal to the human reader and are not at all helpful when your resume gets through the ATS. Your copy should also contain the keywords from the job description. Thats crucial if you want your resume to survive the Applicant Tracking System. A little tip from us: Ditch the good old References available upon request line. 5. Slim down the copy These are busy times and hiring managers are just not that keen on reading big bodies of text. So, after you’re done with your resume, run your eyes through the text once or twice more and consider cutting it down a little. Shorten sentences, delete the fluff, keep the most important information only and use bullet points to make your content easier to read. Don’t overflow your resume with text. Let it breathe! 6. Digitalize your resume We live in an online world so showcase something different than just a written word. Your resumes content is essential, but your resume could offer a richer experience to the hiring manager: Add a link to your personal website or your LinkedIn profile to your resume. You dont have a personal website? Create one with . Hyperlink your email address to make it easier for the hiring manager to contact you. Where appropriate you can even attach links to your social media sites. The hiring manager will google you anyway and by providing the links on your resume, youll appear confident with your social media presence. 7. Be a bit bold By bold, we dont mean rude or silly. Taking a risk to make your resume unique and a bit unconventional pays off sometimes. People who have the courage to present themselves differently than the rest are often viewed by the hiring managers as the most creative and resourceful ones. If you see it fit for the job position youre applying for, try using a soft slang here and there, make a little joke, or be brutally honest and write something you wouldnt normally put on your resume. This will help you stand out and be remembered. But be careful not to overdo it or your resume might end up on a pile of shame! Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

Becoming a Telephone Triage Nurse

Becoming a Telephone Triage Nurse Becoming a Telephone Triage Nurse Telephone triage nursing goes by a few different names, including telehealth nursing and telepathology. This credentialed medical specialty was designed to help patients in immediate need who are unable to get to a doctor’s office or hospital. The specialty is also designed to help those who do not have primary care physicians. The telephone triage nurse works to determine the level of care a patient needs and guides the situation to a resolution. Unlike on-site nurses, these professionals must help patients purely by speaking with them on the phone. Most medical professionals working in this field are licensed nurses and are most commonly referred to as telephone triage nurses. The Telephone Triage Nurse Profession A telephone triage nurse is charged with everything from working with patients to determine if they need to seek emergency treatment, to instructing them to make an appointment with a doctor, to advising them how to treat themselves at home. The underlying role of a telephone triage nurse is to help patients assess the severity of their health problem- saving them a trip to the doctors office or a trip to the emergency room. This service is especially useful for homebound patients, those in rural areas who cant get to a facility, or those unable to pay for medical services. Additionally, telephone triage nurses help doctors reduce their patient load so that they can see patients in more critical need- hence the word triage. Because of their work, telephone triage nurses also help reduce overcrowding and waiting time in emergency medical facilities such as urgent care centers and hospital emergency rooms. Because telephone triage services are operational 24/7, telephone triage nurses may need to work weekends, night shifts, and holidays. Training To become a telephone triage nurse, the first thing you need to do is earn your nursing degree or diploma. After that, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Additional certification as an ambulatory care nurse is suggested and will increase ones chances of getting a job. The certification is offered by the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing and is useful because a section of the exam focuses on telephone triage. If you want to take the exam, you need to have already performed at least 2,000 hours of nursing experience in a clinical setting. Necessary  Skills In addition to the obvious medical training, telephone triage nurses must possess excellent communication skills above everything else. Also, they have to be nimble and think on their feet because health problems arent static- they can worsen at any time. Telephone triage nurses must remain calm throughout the conversation, being empathetic and really listening to patients. They also have to be able to assess each situation quickly.     Places of Employment One of the advantages of this career path is that telephone triage nurses can find employment in a multitude of environments- most notably dedicated telephone triage service centers. That said, jobs are also available in physicians offices, hospitals, outpatient care facilities, trauma centers, poison control centers, and crisis hotlines. A Typical Call The first thing a remote nurse does is pull together basic information about the patient. The nurse finds out the persons age, sex, weight, and height- all of  these contribute to the overall assessment. Next, the nurse inquires if the patient has any known diseases or ongoing health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of panic attacks, or a known heart condition. To accurately assess the patients situation, the nurse must get the patient to describe the symptoms as accurately as possible. For example, for a patient who complains of feeling lightheaded, the nurse might ask whether they feel dizzy, faint, or weak. Once confident that all the necessary information has been collected, the telephone triage nurse can recommend a course of action. For example, if the assessment is that the patient is suffering from heat exhaustion, the patient would be directed to drink fluids and find an air-conditioned room to rest in. If a patient is bleeding heavily from a cooking accident, the telephone triage nurse would direct the patient to compress the wound and seek immediate medical attention. Also, based on the severity of the health issue, the nurse will determine if the patient should schedule a follow-up visit with their general practitioner (GP). What If a Patient Doesnt Have a GP? Many patients dont have the money to visit a general practitioner on a regular basis. For that reason, nurses may also dispense information they think the patient needs from a social welfare perspective. For example, they may direct low-income individuals to programs that can provide financial aid. Pros of Being a Telephone Triage Nurse The pros in this profession are as follows: Youre only dealing with one patient at a time. You feel appreciated because you helped someone in need.Theres no endless paperwork to fill out. After a call, you have a sense of accomplishment because you completed a task- and you can move on to the next call.Theres no fear of contracting a communicable disease, such as tuberculosis. You dont have to deal with needles  and injections, which can be challenging. You dont have to put up with patients who complain about every ache and pain because (for the most part) youre dealing with a real health issue. Cons of Being a Telephone Triage Nurse The cons of this profession are as follows: You could help save a life but you dont get to see how someone improved based on your advice. You have to rely on someones ability to describe something difficult, such as a rash.It can be stressful working on your own when dealing with a seriously ill patient.People tend to be less polite on the phone because they cant see the person behind the voice.  Your tone of voice has to be spot-on because a patient cant see your facial expressions, which communicate a lot in person. Salary and Job Outlook According to salary.com, as of June 2018, an RN staff nurse, phone triage  worker earns a median salary of  $71,931, with a range of $65,635 and $81,344. While the U.S.  Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not post salaries for registered triage nurses, it does post a comparable median salary of $70,000 for registered nurses. And, according to the BLS, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026. This is much faster than the average for all occupations due to employment growth in the field as the population ages and the need to replace workers who will be retiring over the coming decade.

Verbal Communication Is an Essential Soft Skill

Verbal Communication Is an Essential Soft Skill Verbal Communication Is an Essential Soft Skill Verbal communication is the sharing of information among individuals or groups through speaking. It is one of the ways we interact with our bosses, employees, co-workers, and customers or clients at work. We also use  active listening, nonverbal communication such as body language and facial expressions, and writing to communicate. When your verbal communication skills are weak, the intended recipients of your messages wont be able to understand them and, subsequently, wont be able to respond appropriately. While these failures do not rest solely with the speaker- poor listening skills or the misreading of non-verbal cues may also be to blame- they begin with him or her. How to Improve Your Verbal Communication Improving your verbal communication skills will help you avoid misunderstandings at work. Take the following steps, beginning even before any words leave your mouth: Be Prepared: Before you start a conversation, figure out what information you want to provide. Then decide on the best way to relay it to your recipient. For example, do you need to do it face-to-face or will a phone call do?Choose Your Words Carefully: Use vocabulary  your recipient can easily comprehend:  If he or she doesnt understand your words, your message will be lost.Speak Clearly:  Be aware of your volume and rate of speech. Speaking too softly will make it difficult for anyone to hear you, but shouting can be very off-putting. Speak slowly enough to be understood, but not so slowly that you bore the listener or put him or her to sleep. Use the Proper Tone:  Your voice may reveal  your true feelings and attitude. For example, if youre angry or sad, it will come across through your tone. Try to stay in control of this, to  avoid revealing more than you want and distracting the listener from your messages intent.Make Eye Contact: The person to whom you are speaking will better be able to connect with you if you maintain eye contact throughout the conversation.Check In With the Listener Periodically: Get feedback to make sure the person with whom you are speaking understands you. He or she must get what you are trying to say. While you are speaking, observe his or her facial expressions and body language, or simply ask for verbal confirmation that he or she understands you. Avoid Distractions: Background noise will distract your listener and make it hard for him or her to hear what you are saying, never mind, understand it. Find a quiet place to talk. If you are speaking to someone by phone, go to a quiet area and make sure he or she is in one as well. If that isnt possible at the moment, arrange to talk when it is. Take a Leap of Faith in a Job Hopper

Take a Leap of Faith in a Job Hopper Leap of Faith in a Job Hopper? Take a Leap of Faith in a Job Hopper I read a blog post recently that posed a rather simple question: Would you hire a job hopper? Put another way: If you had two finalists for a position, would you go with the one who stayed five years at her last job? Or the job hopper who worked five jobs in the last five years? The topic generated more than the usual number of comments, with some valuing loyalty and others arguing that many of today's workers are simply more apt to bolt if their jobs are not serving their careers or lives well. Any job hopper would cause a bit of concern with a hiring manager, which is only natural. But what amuses me - or maybe more accurately, ticks me off - is a hiring manager who would reject a job hopper while his or her own company shows no loyalty to its own staff by always taking layoffs as a path to profitability, or that doesn't invest sufficiently in employee training and development (if at all), or both. Such a hiring manager would be a shining example of corporate hypocrisy. If I were a hiring manager, I would admittedly be concerned about hiring the job hopper. But at the same time, I would be compelled to ask myself these questions: Would the applicant fill a critical role for us, and fill it well? Do we have an employee training and professional development program that mightturn this job hopper into a high-level contributor and long-term employee? Are the applicant's long-term (i.e., three to five years out) career goals ones we could feasibly help him or her reach through professional development? Does this person want professional development? If this person were to leave after a year or so, could the work be redistributed easily? If the job-hopping was related to salary or benefits issues, how do we stack up against our competitors or companies of similar size? Hiring managers need not fear job hoppers unless they have no clear career goals in mind. I'd be concerned about hiring a person who cannot clearly state that in a resume or articulate it in an interview. Yes, job hopping may be a regular practice among the Millennial/Generation Y set, but anyone - at any stage in life - can hop from job to job without a purpose. That's why, as an applicant, you should chart your career course before you search for a company you believe would be a good stop along the way. I welcome thoughts from both job seekers and hiring managers. Does this topic bring out more than just a little bit of emotion in you?

How to Describe Work Ethic on Consulting Jobs Resume Management Resources

How to Describe Work Ethic on Consulting Jobs Resume Management Resources How to Describe Work Ethic on Consulting Jobs Resume Management Resources Motivated? Driven? Strategic? Responsible? Even if these adjectives describe you as a professional, you should avoid using them when describing your work ethic on your resume for consulting jobs. Here’s why: They’re buzzwords. (For more examples, see this list from LinkedIn). These are the exact same words that countless other consultants are sprinkling throughout their job applications - adjectives you can be assured hiring managers are tired of reading. And aside from being overused, buzzwords don't necessarily communicate your work ethic as effectively as you might think. Dan DeNisco, senior vice president for Robert Half Management Resources, says: “Some of the overused words that I prefer not to see on a consulting resume are creative, innovative, self-starter and good communicator. In particular, creative and innovative don’t go over very well in financial reporting. I want to see specific, value-added statements that highlight ROIs of interest to prospective employers.” Reach for action phrases - not just a thesaurus So, how do you make your work ethic stand out on paper? By underscoring your deliverables. Use your resume to spell out some of the results you’ve achieved in previous consulting jobs. Here are some examples of how to replace a tired adjective with a more engaging action phrase that conveys the same work ethic: Responsible Performed analysis of internal controls, systems and financial reporting and implemented new procedures that shortened the monthly closing cycle from six to three days. Strategic Reduced general and administrative expenses by $300,000 by reviewing and renegotiating vendor agreements. Effective Developed and implemented new policies and process improvements for the manufacturing group in Q2, which allowed them to increase productivity by 11 percent in Q3 without raising associated costs. Organizational Orchestrated a multidepartment initiative in the investment division to investigate “asset merge” discrepancies. Identified several control inefficiencies and devised action plans with management, banks and security holders to correct. Now more than ever, companies value the flexibility and specialized expertise a consultant can bring to their more complex projects and initiatives. If your resume for consulting jobs highlights the measurable results of your skills, rather than listing a handful of overused adjectives, you will be much more likely to attract a prospective client’s attention.
